FSM – frequency specific microcurrent (Dr. McMakin)
FSM is a type of electrotherapy, which uses low level current to treat underlying causes of illness and pain. What makes this method different from the widely known TENS-therapy (trans-cutaneous-nerval-electrostimulation) is, that FSM uses a much lower current level and specific frequencies to target specific problems. The electric current is applied via wet towels or self-adhering electrodes. The patient usually doesn’t feel the current (only the effects of it). Sensitive people may feel a slight tickle.
The method was already used in the early 1900s by doctors, but with the rise of the pharmaceutical industry it was abolished and abandoned.
Thanks to Dr. Carol McMakin the treatment including the devices needed for it have been rediscovered in the 1990s and taken to the next level. It’s now used by practioners and patients all over the world. With FSM we now have a means to treat issues we simply were not able to treat in a profound manner before.
Take nerve pain for example. Damaged and inflamed nerves used to heal, or not, over very long time periods. Meanwhile the only way to relieve the symptoms to a certain extent, was to keep taking pain medications. If you were lucky the nerve pain gradually disappeared on its own over a period of months, sometimes years. With FSM it can be a matter of minutes, maybe in rare cases hours.
The list of conditions, it can be used for, seems endless. Amongst others FSM can be used for all sorts of nerve pain, myofascial pain, fibromyalgia pain, for recovery after surgery or (sports-) injuries and for all kinds of inflammation. Also emotional problems can be addressed. Even inner organ problems can be supported. That makes it an integral part of my functional medicine practice.
